History

The history of Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus or Halicarnassos goes back to the 13th century BC. Excavaties reveal the 5000-year-old history of this town. Many civilizations found their home here. Carians for example, Homer tells in his Ilia, that the Carians helped to defend Troy.

Herodotus, known as the father of history, was born in Bodrum in 484 BC. - and he said that Bodrum had been founded by the Dorian’s. The next settlers were Carians and Lelegians. in the 6’th. century BC., the region came under Persian rule. Its most brilliant period was around 353. BC. when it was the capital of the Satrap of Caria (In this century it was famous for its trade, sailing, and boatbuilding.) Artemisia who was a warrior-woman played a significant role in the protection of the Asian Union and she achieved fame by adopting a stance against Rhodes as the Admiral of the Carian fleet in 480 BC and a later area was taken by Turks in the 11 century.

The Byzantines captured it again during the First Crusade in 1096, but the Turks retook in the 14th century. The kings of Rhodes took over the area in 1415. Suleiman Magnificent expelled the knights in 1522 and the area was taken under the Ottoman Empire. After the declaration of Republic in 1923, the name of the area was changed as Bodrum.

Historical city center

Bodrum it’s a paradise for a history lovers with a wide of historical sight and museums.

The most prominent feature of Bodrum is the castle of St. Peter. The castle's origins date back to the knights of St. John This group of expatriates began in the 11th century with a church and hospital in Jerusalem. Although belonging to the Catholic religion care was denied to no-one. When the knights arrived they instructed their builders to remove all usable materials from the tomb of King Mausolos as the castle construction began in the 1400's. The knights referred to the town as Mesy not knowing that they were in the ancient Halicarnassus. The fortress became known as the Castle of St. Peter, the Liberator, it served as the sole place of refuge for all Christians on the West Coast of Asia during the time of the crusades. For over a century, the castle served as a stronghold in the knights community.

Under Turkish care, the castle has undergone several uses including being a military base, a prison, and a public bath. But now it is one of the finest museums in this region.

The Mausoleum is Bodrum’s oldest antiquity and was built by Artemisia II in honor of her husband King Mausolos. It became one of the wonders of the ancient world; Mausoleum still is the general term for a large tomb. The entire structure stood at over 50 meters in height. The first reliefs from the Mausoleum reached the British Museum in London in 1846, these included frescos and other objects.

Bodrum Antique Theater One of the most well-preserved sites remaining in Bodrum from the Classical Age, a very striking feature of the theater includes the exact 40-centimeter spacing between seats. With a capacity for 13,000 people, the theater continues to host events, as it did hundreds of years ago. Bodrum Maritime Museum With an impressive array of boats, the history of seafaring and boatbuilding is explored with thousands of examples. On the top floor, an impressive collection of seashells also dazzles visitors.

Myndos Gate the remnants of the gate, which faced the ancient city of Myndos, witnessed one of the most important scenes during the siege of Alexander the Great. Today, the area also has graves from the Hellenistic and Roman eras.

Ottoman Shipyard Located in Bodrum center behind the marina, the shipyard, and its tower were built in 1775. After the Ottoman fleet was destroyed by the Russians in 1770, the new ships were made in this yard. Behind this historical site, an Ottoman graveyard is present while the tower holds various art events. Karakaya Village The three hundred year old village was created as a shelter from pirate attacks and can be reached by taking the path on the right before getting to Gümüşlük. While some of the sites were abandoned, another side was re-inhabited and the view of stone houses covered in greenery facing the sea is remarkable. Another impressive sight is the 18th-century windmills at the entrance on the village.

Local tastes and cuisine

Turkey is rightly famed for its cuisine, which is rich and savory, not particularly spicy-hot, with abundant use of vegetables (which makes vegetarians happy.)

Turkish cuisine is often regarded as one of the greatest in the world. Its culinary traditions have successfully survived over 1,300 years for several reasons, including its favorable location and Mediterranean climate. Contrary to common belief, Turkish cuisine is generally not spicy (though this varies throughout the seven regions). Seasonings and sauces, although frequently used, are simple and light and do not overpower the food's natural taste.

National Turkish Drink is Ayran; this drink made from yogurt and makes fresh even in the hottest days. National alcoholic drink of Turkey is Raki. This drink made from anise and there is a special tradition how you have to drink it. The first in the special glass you are putting half of glass Raki, ice and then putting some water. It’s changing the color and become milky white. Next to the Raki mostly serve grilled fish, white cheese or goat cheese and greens with olives.

From the local cuisine, we advise you to savor Stuffed Squash Blossoms (Kabak çiçeği dolması), Pounded Chicken and Whet (Keşkek), Okra/ Ladies’ Fingers with Olive Oil (Zeytinyağlı bamya) etc. All of this dishes and lots others you will find in restaurants and even maybe in your hotel.

Bodrum Nightlife

Nightclubs, cafes, and restaurants stay open all night to accommodate Bodrum's party-hearty types. The night life of Bodrum is something really very special. Even Turks will rank Bodrum after Istanbul as Number2. Bodrum probably has more bars per area than all other places in Turkey, appealing to all tastes.

Bar Street is one mile Long Street runs parallel with the sea, so all the bars and restaurants, cafes on the right side offer a sitting area on the beach with the scenic view of the castle.

Before you hit the clubs, take your pick of a huge range of bars which sell every type of cocktail and beer under the Turkish sun. Any night on Bar Street is also a great opportunity to try out some of the local cultures by ordering a Turkish Raki drink, but be warned (or pleasantly surprised) that this drink is 45% alcohol, so playing centurion with it is not advised.

Once you’ve had your fill of the bars, spend at least one night in the most popular and open-air Halikarnas Nightclub. This club doesn’t understand moderation in terms of foam, lighting, volume and dance shows, and the majority of punters don’t leave until the sun rises over the fuzzy horizon.
