General Information About Kütahya

Kutahya is a town in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey. Known for its colored tiles, Kutahya Faience, the town also serves as a base for the ruins of the Temple of Zeus in Aizanoi, amongst the best preserved Roman ruins in the country.

Today, with its 215,000 residents, and its modern heavy industry, in addition to its traditional trade of tile making, Kutahya could be considered as one of the bigger cities in Turkey. However, there is still something of a rural mentality here, and, although the local Dumlupınar University is slowly changing this, any visitor can expect to be welcomed with some sort of curiosity. Also, Kutahya is known for its hot springs and humans.

Transport

While the city has a fleet of private minibuses of various colours (red, green, and blue), and yellow city buses, the average traveler won't feel a pressing need to use them, as most of the sights and useful locations are located near each other and walking around is easy enough (while the city is surrounded by mountains, it's positioned on a flat ground, so you won't have to climb up and down too much, unless you decide to ascend to the castle).

Nature and landscapes

The rocky area between the pine trees located on the 26th km of Kutahya- Eskisehir road, along the eastern part of the province, is called "Phrygian Valley". Phrygian valleys which are covered with the tufas of the Old Volcanic mountain Turkmen has been used by various tribes since ancient times and save all beauty of nature till our times.

Kutahya is famous for its hot springs. Yoncalı, 13-km from Küthaya, is developing lately. The Ilıca Village 4-km to the field side from the junction on the way from Bozüyük to Kütahya is also famous for its thermal baths. It is just a typical thermal village with its houses and villas spread on both sides of the valley. When you proceed from Çavdarhisar to the southwest you will arrive at the Simav district of Kütahya. The Eynal Thermal facilities are situated here.

Weather

Kutahya has a continental climate and semi-arid climate with cold and snowy winters and hot and dry summers. Rainfall occurs mostly during the spring and autumn.

History

The history of the region dates back to as early as 3rd millennium B.C. when it was called Kotiaion or Cotyaeum - "the city of the Goddess Kotys". Around the 12th century, the region got attached to the Phrygian kingdom and thus became the most important city of the country. Later, though Phrygian kingdom collapsed, Kotiaion retained its strong position. In 1071 C.E., the Seljuks conquered the city only to lose and reconquer it from the European crusaders. Around 1302, Kutahya became the capital of Germiyan Turkmen principality and in the next century it became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1514, Sultan Selim-I defeated the Persians and resettled the tile workers from Tebriz in Kutahya and Iznik, thus leading the city to emerge as an Ottoman center of ceramic industries. Much later, in the 19th century, with the growth of Eskisehir, Kutahya lost some of its glamour and economic importance.

Historical city center

Kutahya Castle survived until present day from Byzantine period which built on high hill consists of three parts. Inner fortress together with upper and lower parts. Inner fortress was situated in the upper part of the castle and here is a small mosque, two warehouses, offices, military barracks , cisterns and guard rooms were used for living. Kutahya castle covers an area of 3500 m has 75 bastions. It takes almost 45 minutes to walk from City center up to the castle however it’s worth when you see the unique panoramic view of the city and area. The ancient city of Aizonai, famous with its majestic Zeus Temple is about 50-km inside the main road. You need to go up till Çavdarhisar District and then turn to Emet. The ancient city is a few kilometers from Çavdarhisar. It is believed to have been devoted to Mother Goddess Kybele as well as to Zeus. The sacred site of the local Goddess Meter Steunene identified with Cybele is 2-km to the southeast of the ancient city. The places of interest to see in Aizonai are the theatre and the stadium right next to it, the street with columns, the gymnasium, the bath and the monumental graves. Some of the items obtained from the diggings in the city are now displayed in the Museum of Kutahya.
