Marmaris Culture and History

imageframe-image

Culture

Once a sleepy fishing village, Marmaris has ballooned into one of the largest resorts on the Aegean coastof Turkey. Little of its history remains, as the town is now a modern development with tourism at its heart and soul. The population swells to a massive 200,000 in the summer, with most hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shops catering to low-cost package holidays, although there are facilities for all budgets.

Despite the development which reaches around 10km along the west of the bay, Marmaris is also well-known for its expanse of green, present the whole year round thanks to the pine-covered hills which surround the town. There are many beaches around the bay, and there are ancient cities and seaside villages close by for day trips. The yacht harbour is the biggest and newest in Turkey, and therefore the busiest charter port especially for trips along the Turquoise Coast.

In addition to the climate, beaches and facilities of the town, the transportation infrastructure is a definite plus for attracting visitors. It has easy connections to the nearby airport Dalaman, ferries to Rhodes, and on the road to Datca and Fethiye. The harbour has attracted by private boats from around the world, with yacht maintenance and production in the workshops on the Yalanci Strait. With the climate being comfortable even in winter, and the nearby impressive mountains and pine forests, Marmaris is likely to remain a popular and practical holiday spot for a long time.

History

It is not known when Marmaris was founded, but Physkos as Marmaris was previously known was part of the Carian Empire in the 6th century B.C. when overrun by the Lydians. Another invasion by the Lydians in 334 B.C. led to the partition of the Roman Empire of Alexander the Great.

In 138 B.C. Attalus the 3rd, King of Bergama, whose predecessors had ruled Caria for 90 years, ceded Physkos to Rome and the city was ruled from Rhodes by Roman generals. The city became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1425, and the castle was built in 1521 AD for use in a planned assault on Rhodes. The Ottoman Sultan at the time, Kanuni Sultan Suleiman, changed the name of the town to Mimaras, which then became Marmaris according to the historian Evlija Celebi.

A local rumor has it that the reason for the change of name Mimaras was that Suleiman, on returning from his expedition to Rhodes, disliked the castle and exclaimed "mimar as!” which means "hang the architect!" Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support this amusing story.

The castles saved till our days and now open for guests as a historical museum; you can see it in the Old Town part, what is on the Marmaris marina. There also you can walk between the old Mediterranean style made homes and streets and feel the atmosphere of those times.

Local tastes and cuisine

Turkey is rightly famed for its cuisine, which is rich and savory, not particularly spicy-hot, with abundant use of vegetables (which makes vegetarians happy.)

Turkish cuisine is often regarded as one of the greatest in the world. Its culinary traditions have successfully survived over 1,300 years for several reasons, including its favorable location and Mediterranean climate. Contrary to common belief, Turkish cuisine is generally not spicy (though this varies throughout the seven regions). Seasonings and sauces, although frequently used, are simple and light and do not overpower the food's natural taste.

National Turkish Drink is Ayran; this drink made from yogurt and makes fresh even in the hottest days. National alcoholic drink of Turkey is Raki. This drink made from anise and there is a special tradition how you have to drink it. The first in the special glass you are putting half of glass Raki, ice and then putting some water. It’s changing the color and become milky white. Next to the Raki mostly serve grilled fish, white cheese or goat cheese and greens with olives.

Marmaris is famous with its honey, Pine honey is the most widely produced honey in the region. In addition flower, honey and carob honey are also produced and sold.

Marmaris Nightlife

A night out in Marmaris is an unforgettable experience. There are so many bars and clubs that you will inevitably have a hard time choosing which to visit. Indeed, many people spend their nights hopping between them.

Most people begin their evenings in Marmaris at Long Beach. When you’ve visited in the day time, it’s difficult to believe how the place can transform in the evening! This area, right on the sea-front, plays host to a number of restaurants and fun bars to start the night at. With everything from karaoke bars to dance clubs, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The regulations insist on music stopping here at midnight, so at this point nearly everyone moves on to Bar Street.

Bar Street is where the fun really begins. The night really gets going around 1 am when you enter this street. With so many bars and clubs facing out onto the narrow street and pumping out music, even if you can’t decide which one to enter, you can stay and play in the street. It is estimated that around 40,000 people from across the globe visit Bar Street every night in high season, and there are clubs to suit every taste, from live music to trance.

A little way out of Marmaris, around a 40 minute walk, is the Armutalan area. A little quieter than Bar Street it has several bars and clubs for both dining and dancing. It has one indoor club, Club Pacha, open until 4 am.

And if you fancy something a little different from your usual night out on the town, there are the Moonlight Cruises. Setting off at 11 pm, you will be taken out to sea with the music pumping for only 10 Turkish Lira. Arriving back at 2 am, there’ll still be time to visit any other bars and clubs you like. If you are going with a large group, there is also the option of hiring a private party boat with food, drinks and music all included. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate a special event.
